The short answer
This checklist asks about the two areas autism affects: social communication, and repetitive behaviors or sensory differences. It cannot tell you whether your child is autistic. If you notice several signs, or your child has lost skills, talk to your pediatrician and ask for an evaluation. In Florida, children under 3 can be referred to Early Steps for free, with no doctor’s referral.
About this checklist
We wrote these questions from the signs of autism and the developmental milestones published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They are grouped the way autism is diagnosed: a diagnosis needs differences in social communication and repetitive behaviors, interests or sensory reactions.
Answer for how your child usually is, not for their best or worst day. Many children who are not autistic show one or two of these signs, and some autistic children show few of them at home. A checklist can help you decide whether to ask for help. It cannot replace an evaluation by a qualified professional.
Questions parents ask
Is this an autism test?+
No. It is a checklist of signs from CDC guidance, written by Hope Center. It is not a diagnosis or a validated screening test. Only a qualified professional can diagnose autism, after a full evaluation.
Is there an official autism screening for toddlers?+
Yes. Pediatricians use the M-CHAT-R/F for toddlers 16 to 30 months, usually at the 18- and 24-month checkups. Ask your child’s doctor for it. Read what the M-CHAT-R/F asks.
Are my answers saved?+
No. Your answers stay on your device and are gone when you leave the page. We do not need your name to show your result. If you would like a call, the form below only asks for your contact details.
My child is under 12 months. What should I watch for?+
Not responding to their name by about 9 months and few facial expressions are early signs the CDC lists. See early signs of autism by age, and talk to your pediatrician about any worry.
Could it be ADHD or something else?+
Some signs overlap with ADHD, speech delays, anxiety or hearing problems, and a child can have more than one. That is why an evaluation matters. See autism or ADHD?
Does Hope Center diagnose autism?+
Yes. Our clinical director performs autism diagnostic evaluations with a supervising licensed psychologist. Call 561-337-8865 or see how our evaluations work.
