Take the next step

By the Hope Center clinical team · Clinically reviewed by Aisha Albright-Jourdan, MSW, LCSW, BCBA · Updated October 20, 2026 · Facts current as of October 20, 2026

The short answer

Punta Gorda families use Gulf Central Early Steps (239-433-6700), Charlotte County Public Schools Child Find (941-559-1887), CARD-USF (813-974-2532), APD's Fort Myers office and the Charlotte County Sheriff's Project Lifesaver program (941-575-5345). Hope Center's nearest center is in Port Charlotte at 4055 N Tamiami Trail, Suite 24, and it also serves Punta Gorda homes and schools.

Punta Gorda is the Charlotte County seat, and families here share most autism services with Port Charlotte across the Peace River. Charlotte County stands out in two ways: its special needs shelter explicitly includes people with moderate cognitive conditions, and the Sheriff's Office runs a Project Lifesaver tracking program and a Take Me Home registry. This guide covers those, plus screening, school and ABA options, including Hope Center's Port Charlotte center. For the county view, see our Charlotte County autism resources guide. Details are from each agency's own page as of October 2026; confirm before you go.

Who screens young children in Punta Gorda?

  • Under 3: the Health Planning Council of Southwest Florida manages Early Steps for the Gulf Central area, which includes Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, Highlands, Hardee and Sarasota counties. Call (239) 433-6700 or toll-free (866) 510-5594, or use the online referral form. Anyone can make a referral. The council says there is no income or insurance requirement to qualify, and insurance is billed only with the parent's authorization. See our Early Steps guide.
  • Ages 3 to 5: Charlotte County Public Schools' FDLRS and Child Find program offers free developmental screenings in communication, motor skills, vision, hearing and preschool readiness. For a phone referral, call (941) 559-1887 or (941) 559-1885, or use the online referral form. The FDLRS associate center for Charlotte is FDLRS Suncoast, 1960 Landings Blvd., Sarasota, phone 941-927-9000.

Note: a Charlotte schools page also lists an older Early Steps number. We use the number on the Health Planning Council's own Early Steps page; if one does not work, try the statewide line, 1-800-218-0001.

How do Charlotte County schools evaluate older children?

Punta Gorda students attend Charlotte County Public Schools; the district lists 941-255-0808. For an enrolled child, send the school a written request for an initial ESE evaluation and keep a copy. Florida's rule gives the district 30 days to ask for consent or explain in writing why it refuses, and once you consent, 60 calendar days to complete the evaluation, not counting certain school breaks.

If your child's private BCBA or RBT should observe or work with them at school, Florida law (s. 1003.572) allows it when the teacher and principal agree to the time and place. See private ABA in public school.

Which CARD and APD offices serve Punta Gorda?

CARD-USF covers Charlotte County within its 14-county region and says its services are delivered at no cost. Call 813-974-2532 to register. It offers consultation, training and resource help, not ABA therapy. See which CARD serves my county.

APD: Charlotte County is in APD's Suncoast Region and is served by the Fort Myers office, 2295 Victoria Avenue, Suite 221, Fort Myers, FL 33901, phone (800) 615-8720, which also serves Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee. See how to apply for APD services.

What is Project Lifesaver in Charlotte County?

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office offers Project Lifesaver to Charlotte County residents. The program is for adults and children who wander because of Alzheimer's, autism and related conditions. Participants wear a one-ounce, battery-operated wristband that sends a tracking signal every second. When a caregiver reports the person missing, a search team uses a mobile locator to find them.

The Sheriff's Office also runs Take Me Home, a free program for Charlotte County residents who cannot speak for themselves, including people with autism or Down syndrome. A photo and description are stored so deputies and 911 operators can share them quickly if the person goes missing. Take Me Home is not a tracking program.

For either program, contact CCSO Community Affairs at (941) 575-5345 or communityaffairs@ccsofl.net. If your child is missing, call 911 right away and check water first. See Project Lifesaver and sheriff registries in Florida.

Can an autistic child use the Charlotte County special needs shelter?

Possibly. The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County describes the special needs shelter as a shelter of last resort for people who use daily supplemental oxygen or electrically dependent equipment, or who have moderate cognitive conditions. Points to know:

  • Advance registration is required to be admitted.
  • Call Charlotte County's Office of Emergency Management at 941-833-4000 to confirm eligibility, or register online through the state registry.
  • Only service animals are allowed; pets dropped off at the shelter go to a pet-friendly shelter.
  • Bring medications, special items such as communication devices and chargers, and label your belongings.

Punta Gorda sits on Charlotte Harbor, so know your evacuation zone and decide early where you would go. Register before storm season starts; the shelter provides only limited basic medical help. See how to register for a special needs shelter.

Is the Punta Gorda library a good outing?

The Punta Gorda Charlotte Library is at 401 Shreve St., Punta Gorda, FL 33950, phone 941.833.5460. Before a first visit, call to ask about quieter times and the youth area layout, and show your child photos of the building so they know what to expect.
