TRICARE ABA Therapy in Jacksonville, FL

TRICARE East (Humana Military) • NAS Jacksonville and Mayport families • 561-337-8865

Jacksonville is a Navy town, and many families at NAS Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport are raising autistic children while juggling duty schedules, deployments and the next set of orders. TRICARE covers ABA through its own program with its own paperwork. Hope Center for Behavior Change is in network with TRICARE East (Humana Military) and provides ABA in homes, daycares, schools and the community across Duval County, so we can help you move from diagnosis to first session without guessing at the rules.

The short answer

TRICARE ABA therapy in Jacksonville is covered through the TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration and managed in Florida by Humana Military (TRICARE East). Your child needs an autism diagnosis from a TRICARE-approved provider, a referral and pre-authorization. Hope Center for Behavior Change accepts TRICARE East and serves Duval County military families with no waitlist.

How does TRICARE cover ABA in Jacksonville?

TRICARE pays for applied behavior analysis through the Comprehensive Autism Care Demonstration (ACD). Florida is in the TRICARE East Region, and the regional contractor is Humana Military, which handles ABA referrals and authorizations. TRICARE East customer service is 800-444-5445.

Your child qualifies when they are enrolled in a TRICARE health plan and have an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis from a TRICARE-approved provider. Families of active-duty service members, retirees and certain National Guard and Reserve members can use the ACD. TRICARE says the program is currently authorized through December 31, 2028.

  • A referral and pre-authorization are required for all ABA, under every TRICARE plan
  • Each authorization letter covers six months of ABA
  • A new referral from the diagnosing provider is needed every two years
  • There are no yearly or lifetime caps on ABA
  • All ABA on the same day is subject to one copayment

Rules come from TRICARE’s Autism Care Demonstration page. We confirm your child’s coverage before therapy starts. The full program is explained in our TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration guide.

What do active-duty families at NAS Jax and Mayport need to do first?

If the sponsor is on active duty, TRICARE requires two enrollments. The sponsor must enroll in the Navy’s (or their branch’s) Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), and your child must be enrolled in the Extended Care Health Option (ECHO). Start both early, because they take time and missing them can hold up ABA.

From diagnosis to first session: the TRICARE steps

  1. 1Autism diagnosisFrom a TRICARE-approved diagnosing provider, such as your child’s primary care manager or a specialist. Our [Jacksonville autism evaluation guide](/florida-aba-guide/diagnosis/autism-evaluation-jacksonville/) covers local options.
  2. 2Referral to Humana MilitaryThe diagnosing provider sends the ABA referral. ABA cannot start until it is pre-authorized.
  3. 3Choose a provider and call usCall 561-337-8865 or [contact us](/contact/). We check your TRICARE benefits for free.
  4. 4Outcome measures and assessmentTRICARE requires four baseline measures (PDDBI, Vineland, SRS and a parenting stress index). A BCBA then assesses your child, usually at home.
  5. 5Plan and authorizationThe BCBA writes the treatment plan, our clinical director reviews it, you sign it and we submit it to Humana Military.
  6. 6ABA beginsSessions usually start within 3 to 5 business days after the plan is approved.

Your Autism Services Navigator from TRICARE coordinates care along the way. Our TRICARE ABA referral checklist lists the paperwork that most often causes delays.

Where can TRICARE ABA happen for Duval County families?

Most TRICARE ABA we provide in Jacksonville happens at home, where routines like meals, bedtime and sibling play give real practice. Community sessions and daycare are also possible when they are written into the plan Humana Military authorizes.

School is different. TRICARE allows only limited, targeted ABA in a school or preschool setting, delivered by the treating BCBA and pre-authorized in the plan. It does not pay for an RBT to shadow your child at school. Our guide to TRICARE ABA at school explains the rules, and Florida law offers another route covered on our school-based ABA in Jacksonville page.

We serve homes in Duval County. We do not promise sessions on base, and we do not currently serve Clay County, Orange Park or St. Johns County. If you live elsewhere, call to ask whether we can staff your area.

What if you PCS to or from Jacksonville?

Orders do not have to mean losing your child’s progress. TRICARE says you can request new referrals for your new home station before you move, and you should not disenroll from your plan before moving. After you arrive, you have 90 days from your address change to change your TRICARE plan, and you must confirm enrollment at the new duty station.

Tell your Autism Services Navigator and your current BCBA as soon as orders are likely, and ask for copies of the diagnosis, referral, treatment plan and outcome measures. If you are arriving in Jacksonville, call us before you move so we can talk through timing. If you are leaving, we help prepare a handoff for your next provider. See PCS to Florida with ABA.

Questions families ask

Is Hope Center in network with TRICARE in Jacksonville?+

Yes. We accept TRICARE East (Humana Military), which covers Florida. Our Jacksonville office is on Belfort Parkway, and our team provides ABA in homes, daycares, schools and the community in Duval County. See our Jacksonville hub.

What will TRICARE ABA cost my family?+

You pay your plan’s usual copayment or cost-share, and all ABA on one day counts as one copayment. Costs differ by plan and sponsor status. We check your benefits for free and explain your share before therapy starts. See TRICARE Prime vs Select for ABA.

Do retirees’ children qualify for TRICARE ABA?+

Yes. The Autism Care Demonstration covers qualifying family members of retirees, as well as active-duty families and certain Guard and Reserve members, when they are enrolled in a TRICARE plan. The EFMP and ECHO requirements apply to active-duty families.

Does TRICARE cover ABA for ADHD alone?+

No. ABA under the Autism Care Demonstration is for autism. A child with ADHD and no autism diagnosis cannot get ABA through TRICARE. Self-pay is available for all our services, and we can explain options when you call.

Can parent training fit around deployments and duty hours?+

We train parents every week, and goals can be set around shift work and deployments. Parent training and BCBA supervision can sometimes be done by telehealth, though in person is preferred. Tell your BCBA early if your schedule changes.

Is there a waitlist for TRICARE families?+

No. There is no waitlist. Once Humana Military approves your child’s plan, services usually begin within 3 to 5 business days. The overall timeline depends on the referral, outcome measures and paperwork coming back.
